Course Description
The Remote Research Assistant Program is a one-year, part-time experiential learning opportunity offered by MARI (Misdiagnosis Association and Research Institute). This program is designed to build foundational skills in scientific communication, knowledge translation, and research dissemination. Through 10–15 structured tasks spread over the course of a year, students will contribute to research projects and outreach efforts while developing key competencies that prepare them for future academic or health-related careers.
Learning Objectives
- Translate scientific literature into accessible, audience-appropriate formats
- Prepare and edit abstracts for conferences, journal articles, and other research outputs
- Present scientific findings effectively in both oral and written formats
- Create engaging, evidence-based content for use in infographics, newsletters, or social media
- Understand the basics of knowledge translation and its role in promoting public health literacy
- Work independently and remotely while communicating effectively with a research team
Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a Research Assistant Certification recognizing their achievements and skill development. High-performing participants may also be offered the opportunity to continue working with MARI in a supervisory role, depending on their performance, engagement, and the availability of positions.

- Writing plain-language summaries of academic papers
- Drafting and editing abstracts for upcoming conferences
- Creating social media posts or infographic content
- Preparing presentation slides for webinars or health education events
- Initiating and managing the planning and execution of health-related charity events or community outreach projects
- Reviewing and giving feedback on peer work
Time Commitment
- Estimated Weekly Time Commitment: 3–5 hours/week
- The workload is flexible and task-based; hours may vary depending on assignment timelines.
- Participants are expected to respond to communications in a timely manner and meet agreed-upon deadlines.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate or graduate students (any discipline, though health sciences, psychology, biology, or related fields are an asset)
- Passionate about research, communication, or health advocacy
- Eager to learn and apply new skills—no prior research experience is required
- Proficient in English, both in writing and orally
- Responsible, self-motivated, and able to work independently in a remote environment
